Remote, pristine, and mysterious, Lake Natron is a closed basin, low-lying lake situated in northern Tanzania. Although the lake is alkaline, it is not devoid of life. Lake Natron's waters support a thriving ecosystem of salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, flamingos, other wetland birds, the specially adapted tilapia fish, and algae on which large flocks of flamingos feed. It is shallow and fills up with water for only a few weeks a year when the strange algae-colored water provides unique photographic opportunities. Eighty percent of the island is covered by a dense forest, thus providing a variety of habitats for wildlife such as sitatunga, spotted necked otters, chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes, black and white colubus monkeys, suni, and African grey parrots. Enjoy this hidden Eden as you picnic with chilled champagne and wonderfully prepared food.
